At Home Mini-Mani

When I want my nails to look their best, I do an at home mini manicure. This keeps my nails strong and healthy, while looking well groomed.

nails 2

I start off by cutting and filing my nails. You can use either clippers or scissors to cut your nails, whatever you feel more comfortable with. I am currently using clippers from the brand Ms Manicure. When my nails have been cut to the desired length I file them into shape.

There are a range of shapes you can achieve (especially if you have long nails) including square, oval or even cat claw. I tend to go for a ‘squoval’ shape (a combo of square and oval!) I have recently started using the S-File by Stylfile, an ‘S’ shaped nail file and buffer that curves naturally around the edge of your nail. This was designed by previous ‘The Apprentice’ winner and inventor Tom Pellereau.

I then follow up with a base coat. I always use a base coat, especially when using brightly coloured or dark nail varnishes. Not only does it stop your nails getting stained, but it also makes your manicure last longer. My favourites at the moment are Sally Hansen Double Duty (£4.99) and Maybelline’s Superstay Forever Strong in Crystal Clear (£4.49). These two are great as the double up as a base coat and top coat.

Now time for colour, I always apply at least two layers of my nail polish to get an opaque, even finish. You may be able to get away with applying one coat of a light, shimmery polish, but you want to avoid that wishy-washy look. My favourite nail polish ranges of the moment are Barry M Gelly Hi-Shine, Maybelline Superstay Forever Strong and Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure. They each have a good selection of colours available and last around a week on my nails without any major chipping. They also don’t break the bank!

Try not to apply each layer too thickly, its best using thin layers of polish and build up the colour. Let each coat dry for a couple of minutes before applying the next, as this will mean they are less likely to smudge. Keep a cotton bud dipped in nail varnish remover to hand if you tend to be a little clumsy with your polish. This can be used to clean up any mistakes or polish that is on the skin around your nail.

When I’m happy with the way my nails look, I apply a top coat followed by Essence’s Express Dry Nail Oil. This has been a life saver when it comes to my nails. I always used to find that even hours after I thought my nails had dried I would end up having some kind of imprint or dent in my polish. However, this dries and sets your nails super quickly.

Do you have any nail polish recommendations?

June Favourites

For a bit of beauty inspiration, take a look at the products I have loved during the month of June…

No7 Stay Perfect Foundation (£14.50)

I hadn’t tried any of the Boots No7 foundations until recently. After having a £3 off No7 voucher I decided to give them a whirl. This foundation claims to last up to 24 hours with a natural and lightweight feel. The product gives good medium coverage, and while it lasts a long time, it doesn’t dry to a matte finish so it still manages to look luminous and fresh. Sometimes, long-lasting foundations can tend to cake up and cling to areas of the face during the course of the day. However, I actually think that this foundation looks better as the day goes on. It’s great for those with normal, dry or combination skin. If you prefer a more matte finish maybe try out No7’s Beautifully Matte.

Too Faced Candlelight Glow (£25.00)

I have been using this highlighter for the majority of the month as it’s just so easy to wear. This highlighting powder contains two different shades in a compact. Half is a pale shimmery pink that counteracts any dullness in the skin. The other half is a white gold shade that adds a luminous ‘candlelight glow’ to the face. I usually swirl the two shades together to give a fresh glow to my cheekbones. It does contain shimmer, but doesn’t give an ultra-metallic sheen, so it’s perfect for everyday wear.

Maybelline Colour Drama Lipstick (£4.99)

These lipsticks come in a chunky pencil form, which means you get a bit more precision than a regular lipstick. The finish is satin matte, but doesn’t dry lips out and has a creamy texture. They last a really long time on the lips too, so I don’t need to think about reapplying throughout the day. There is a good selection of shades available ranging from everyday nudes to fluorescent pink. I have been wearing ‘Nude Perfection’ a medium nude and ‘Berry Much’ a deep plum.

My Drugstore Makeup Picks: Eyes

I’m back with the next instalment of my series on my favourite drugstore makeup picks, and this time were looking at eyes! So, here is my list of my all time favourite affordable eye products…

wpid-wp-1422394034475.jpeg

Maybelline Colour Tattoos
These provide a great base for all eyeshadow looks and look great on their own for a wash of colour. If you have seen my previous in depth post on Mac paint pots, you will know that these are highly comparable at just a fraction of the price! They come in a whole range of colours in both matte and shimmer finishes and are priced at around £4.99.

MUA Eyeshadows
MUA shadows are just amazing! They have a massive range of single shadow shades, in traditional and more unique colours, to give a variety of eyeshadow looks. I also use shade 19 (a dark matte brown) to fill in my eyebrows. Their eyeshadow palettes are also of great quality, they are highly pigmented and they have some really good dupes of the Urban Decay Naked palettes. Single eyeshadows are priced at only £1 and palettes are around £4.

L’oreal Infallible Eyeshadows
Highly pigmented, long lasting shadows that always give off a really vibrant finish. Recently I have noticed that these are making less and less of an appearance in the drugstore and I fear they may have been discontinued in the UK (shock, horror!) But they are available on Amazon, and I highly recommend picking them up if you ever see them around!wpid-wp-1422394060284.jpeg

Bourjois Pinceau Liquid Eyeliner
As a big fan of winged liner, I have tried numerous liquid eyeliners over the years and I always come back to this one. Nothing compares. It is long lasting, doesn’t smudge and the brush is so easy to use. It allows you to create a thick or thin line, which is really pigmented and doesn’t required extra layers to build intensity. This is one product I could not live without!

Max Factor Clump Defy Mascara
Now, mascara is all down to personal preference, but for me I always like a mascara that defines my lashes, adds length and the appearance of more lashes without clumping. This is my mascara of the moment. I always have around half a dozen mascaras on the go at a time as I can’t resist testing out new products! But this is something I will definitely be repurchasing.

Rimmel Scandaleyes Pencil Eyeliner
For a long lasting pencil that’s great on the lashline as well as the waterline, you can’t get better than this at the drugstore. It’s a good dupe for the well renowned Urban Decay eyeliners, and has a variety of great shades. This includes a nude pencil which is excellent for use in the waterline to brighten the eyes.

Maybelline Brow Drama Mascara
I use this to set my brows after applying a shadow or cream product when I fill them in. However, if you are lucky enough to have naturally well defined brows this is great for adding a hint of colour and keeping your brows neat and tidy. Big brows are back – embrace them!

Hope you you found this helpful, next time I will be talking about my very favourite lip products (and I will warn you, I am a total lipstick junkie!)

Lyndsey
